2 years ago Morgan Creek began an initiative to promote golf to juniors in the peninsula area. We started by running a golf tournament that was able to raise $13,000+ first year towards junior golf. This money was used for junior golf scholarships and also started an in school golf program called “Grow the Game”.
In the first year, we were able to reach 5 local elementary schools (approximately 350+ kids) and provide a free golf program where we would use the gym and SNAG equipment (plastic clubs, tennis balls, and velcro targets) to introduce the game of golf to Grade 4s in each school.
This program was a big hit and in our 2nd year, Jackman Wealth Advisory – TD Wealth provided $5000 directly towards the program so we can expand into more schools. This year we are in 10 South Surrey/White Rock schools providing free introductory golf to over 1000+ students.
The idea behind the program was not to just get kids golfing but to promote physical activity and trying a sport that many kids don’t have access to. The feedback from teachers, Principals, and the School Board has been very positive. We finished our 10th school on February 27th and met afterward with Sean Juteau, Physical & Health Education Helping Teacher, District Athletic Coordinator, Surrey School District to see the possibilities for 2018/19.
We want to thank everyone who attended our Junior Golf Fundraiser Tournament over the past two years and well as TD Wealth - Jackman Group for their incredible support to the program and our tournament.
